Collingwood's statue at Tynemouth was erected by public subscription to commemorate the life of Vice Admiral Cuthbert Collingwood who was born in Newcastle. To commemorate the bicentenary of his death, Grit & Pearl managed a design competition to examine how the memorial could be enhanced through a permanent and temporary lighting installation.
The client, North Tyneside Council, is particular keen to examine how the monument fits with their strategy to uplift the entrance to the River Tyne. In partnership with South Tyneside Council there has been numerous attempts to light exisiting features and create new landmarks along the shore.
The three companies involved in the competition are White Light, Maurice Brill and Lightfolio.
