Roker Pier Update

Roker Pier Update

Grit & Pearl are working for Sunderland City Council to incorporate a series of art commissions for the regeneration of Marine Walk, Roker. Sunderland was successful in winning £1 million from the Commission for the Built Environment's(CABE)Sea Change Fund last year to revamp Roker's Marine Walk. This figure has been boosted by £500,000 additional funding from the City Council.

CABE's Sea Change Fund is designed to kick-start economic regeneration in coastal areas through investment in culture and heritage.

The Marine Walk project includes events spaces, cliffside lighting, large scale moveable beach pods by Artists team Nicholson Bastik, which will be used for everything from a base for RNLI lifeguards to mobile seaside classrooms, an interpretation trail and the redesign of the pier gates.

Four artists' were shortlisted for the designs for new gates to frame the entrance to Sunderland's historic Roker Pier;

Wendy Ramshaw

Alex Charrington

Fiona Heron

James Hutchinson

Fiona Heron’s ‘Lightwave’ was chosen through an interview and public responses. The gates will be installed in early 2012.
