Sunderland’s flagship £20m Aquatic Centre includes two major ‘%forArt’ commissions. The aquatic themed animation Tropic of Sunderland by award-winning designer Daniel Brown is back-projected onto the glazed elevation of the building, appearing as if the building itself was submerged and teaming with life.

Outside the building, German duo Winter & Hoerbelt have installed 'Looking in Facing Out', a major sculptural statement that replaces existing compounds around two mine gas vents. The two sculptures, loosley based on the story of Janus (the twin headed god of new beginings who looked both inwards and outwards) have the scale and confidence to compete with the scale of the adjacent football ground and the aquatic centre.
